Over the last few months you have noticed that only few sites gracing the bottom of some blogs like mashable. That’s because it was only available for few partners. New Orkut : Skimmed

It’s been a while the new Orkut has been released. And as per the reviews, it’s totally amazing than the previous versions. The new look is very cool and the whole page is completely dynamic and fast. The features can, however, be compared to Facebook on the basis of dynamicity, but Orkut in itself is unique.

The layout now has all the links in one page. Almost all options are accessible from single home page and can be changed or modified without the hassle of redirection from pages. All reminders, alerts and updates are displayed in a drop down tab which expand and collapse on the page itself. New scraps are instantly notified still with no need to go to a new page. Some pages are still the same. For example, the page that manages friends is still the same but its okay as it’s one of only few things which aren’t dynamic.

The home page color scheme can be changed from the buttons provided on the upper left side of the profile. The page has five color schemes:

Looking at the performance, new Orkut is definitely faster and consumes less resource.  The scripts do not stuck like sometimes on Facebook. Though the scraps are instantly notified, but the increment of number of scraps is not displayed until you click the refresh button (not the browser refresh, but a button located on the page itself). It allows video chat as well as web chat on the main home page which is fairly good.

One big flaw in the new version is that it does not allow middle click scrolling i.e. when you press the middle mouse button then scroll the page by moving the cursor up or down with respect to the starting click point. Hope this would be resolved with future developments of the Orkut.

Another thing is that it’s not publicly available. Well it’s a sad thing to hear but there are ways by which you can get yourself an invite:

1. You can join the official new Orkut community and you’ll be given an invite in a few days. It’s a matter of luck cause there are a thousand others who are waiting for the same and you’ll be chosen on what grounds is not known to anybody.
2. People with new Orkut have few invites with them. So you can ask them for an invite. This is the way I found myself one… J
3. Simply wait till the new Orkut is publicly available. This will be the most simplest of course.

On the broader view, new Orkut is completely cool with new features and great user interface and is been appreciated all over. I personally found it very good and was very impressed the way Orkut team worked on its development making it so amazing.

The new google image search is very very fast. The google Image search now has two buttons on the left and right center. The image search is more dynamic. Loved the new image Search from Google.

Midori: Non-Windows OS

I don’t know how many of you are known to the terms “Singularity” and “Midori”. Don’t be mistaken with these simply as literal words. These were someday (Singularity) and currently (Midori) Operating Systems from Microsoft. The news is not new to some, but there exists a Non-Windows Operating System at the Microsoft research laboratories. Here’s a look and know how’s of the OS.

MIDORI is the codename of the project developing at Microsoft’s research labs since 2003. Back in 2008 Microsoft had documented a presentation in a program named CHESS (A systematic testing tool for concurrent software) in which they gave the insights of the programs being developed under Microsoft’s. That’s when the term Midori was first seen. Midori is almost same as Singularity which was documented even earlier.

These are NON-WINDOWS Operating Systems whose micro kernel is an excellent example of 100% managed code. These systems uses SIP which stands for Software Isolated Processes. This is enabled by type-safe languages and a new and abstract instruction set. SIP provides the isolation of OS processes like separate runtimes and isolated object space from the enforcements of the hardware. SIP basically encapsulates the internal processes which makes the system very efficient and provide strong interfaces. Below were the verdicts of the two researchers (Jim Larus and Galen Hunt) at Microsoft’s on Singularity:

“Singularity is a research project focused on construction of dependable systems through innovation in the areas of systems, languages and tools. We are building a research operating system prototype (called singularity), extending programming languages, and developing new techniques and tools for specifying and verifying program behavior”

Midori (which is currently development stage) is somewhat related to singularity in various respects of technology but as it’s the new one it’ll definitely be more efficient and advanced. Project Midori is headed by Eric Rudder and Chief Researcher and Strategy Officer is Craig Mundie.

It’s still an assumption about when will the OS be available but Microsoft is surely working hard on its development. Though it may continue working on future versions Windows Operating Systems but Midori is something which may go ahead of the curve as far as one can imagine.

Will Midori make Microsoft say goodbye to Windows? What will be the life after Windows? Well only time can tell this as more information from deep research labs over at Microsoft’s slips out the clues.

Courier From Microsoft

A few days back Apple tablet seemed to be the most awaited product for the coming year, but not anymore. Microsoft’s rumored tablet according to Gizmodo does exits and is named “Courier”. It’s currently in the development stage. Here’s a look at the Microsoft Courier.

Courier is basically a booklet than a tablet with two separate halves as separate screens. The screen is approximately 7-inch with the famous multitouch panel. The screens are held and connected by a small hinge which has a button on it which is the only physical button on the device. In the video one can clearly see that the screen is very responsive and the look and feel is excellent. It also has a stylus by which one can write notes or draw pictures as well as it can understand finger gesture for additional functions like drag drop etc. It’s also said to have a camera in the backside.

The news about the device was first released on Gizmodo.

Now at this point usually everyone have a few question in mind:

Q. When will Microsoft Courier be available?
A. The guys at Gizmodo are not certain about that.

Q. What will be the cost of the device?
A. The answer still remains the same.

The device does exist but the news available till now is very limited. Till then we can only wait for the updates for the next big product of the software giant Microsoft.

Yahoo Geocities finally shut’s down, after a long run of 10 years. Geocities files got deleted on 26th October 2009. 75 billion images and 8 million pages have been deleted from the Yahoo server.

Yahoo Geocities Team deleted aroung 7+ million hosted sites on geocities. The result is approximate as there are users which have private blogs. There Data is not indexed by google. It was a big decision to close the service.

The Google search results

The google has deleted all the geocities hosted links from their search engine. Now there will be no sites visible on google search. The string “sites:geocities.com” will not return any search results. The Google has now traces of geocities hosted domains.

Microsoft Office Movie Trailer

Microsoft Studio has come up with a movie “Office 2010″. The movie trailers says that there won’t be any CTRL+ALT+DEL. The movie is directed by Dennis Liu and Producer Jonathan Hsu, Matt Anderson Production.

The trailer looks amazing, it describes the life of the employee. A hacker uploads a hypnotic font, which make people believe what they read. The font is between Arial and Wingdings. The movie has a funny character clippy(the Microsoft word “Clippy”) who dies. The movie is action packed as you can see in the trailer. It is full of action, comedy and some very very serious stuff i.e. “office” lol.

Alan Wake-The Game

Of all the companies leading the gaming industries, Remedy Entertainment has set its stage on a monumental level with its upcoming game Alan Wake. With the new technology and use of advanced devices the game has been devloped and will release in 2010.

Like the previous games, this game is also action packed with mysteries revolving round the player i.e. Alan Wake. The game dynamics are thoroughly programmed in order to provide an ultimate gaming experience a player can have.

The storyline runs in a small town of Brightfalls, where Alan and his wife are on a vacation. Alan is a bestselling writer who has lost his edge and comes to this town to have a good time and re-evolve his writing skills. But his latest edition- a thriller which is not yet complete dramatically comes to reality and takes over Alan Wake. His wife turns out to be missing taken by a dark force which when comes to direct contact of light, weakens.

This is only a rough overview of the story the game follows. The hidden factors and other fragments of story will be determined later as the news from the fellows at the Remedy keep up to the updates.

In the game, light and darkness are the key factors governing the gameplay.The dark forces cannot withstand light so a flashlight is a much more important tool in game than a gun or any other weapon. The map or the area can be explored like the other games available in the market. Player can also drive cars, operate machines and enter inside buildings and houses etc. And to add up to all this, the virtual environment which is created is breathtaking or simply amazing. The sunset, the sunrise, winds, rains, storms, tornados and all other aspects of nature are magnificently implanted in a code with extravagant graphics which makes it nearly impossible for a human eye to distinguish between the real and the virtual.

This game will be published by Microsoft Game Studios and will release for PC and Xbox 360 only.

Though the rumors have it, but the game is likely to be released on spring 2010 as per the official announcements.

The preview of cinematics and gameplay was seen at the E3 expo 2009 and now can be found at other places on the web.

Do you need a Upgrade?

Windows is out in stores, now the question is should you switch to windows 7? Two days ago on 22nd Oct windows launched its most awaited windows 7. Now Do you need a upgrade? or Is windows 7 really something that you should get your hands on?

Windows 7 is the new operating system after Windows Vista, Microsoft has worked hard on the complains in Vista. We will check out the new and improved features of Windows Vista nd will decide whether to upgrade it or not. Top 5 things are reviewed:

1. Look and Feel- Like the Windows Vista, Windows 7 too has Aero effects, 3D-Flip and transparency effects. The new Windows is much sexier and smooth and more glossy, windows has really worked on the looks. The taskbar looks amazing, it displays icons of open applications. The taskbar can be seen below.

You can see the preview of the taskbar in the image above. Its pretty cool, you can see the previews of open applications just by hovering your mouse over them, just like vista. Boot Up Screen

Booting Time- I was using the candidate release of Windows 7 since past few months and i must admit it that windows 7 has a pretty less booting time than any other operation system, whether it may be Vista, XP or even Mac OS X. The Windows team has worked on the booting time. Its really good.

Speed and Requirements- The windows 7 requires the same amount of everything that Windows Vista requires. The benefit in using Windows 7 is that it runs faster and smoother than Vista. I love the speed, it does not hangs like the Vista. Although you need a good requirement to run Windows 7.

Compatibility: Well Windows 7 supports all the programs that you use in Windows XP. Earlier version Windows Vista has many application related issues. Windows 7 is coded such that it runs every peice of software which runs on Windows XP but in rare case if it doesn’t, you can use the virtual XP mode in it. So for XP lovers its a good news.

Piracy: It is always been tough to be a pirate, if you are a genuine buyer you don’t have to face many problems. But Windows 7 seems to be the home of pirates. You can use all your downloaded Video’s and Audio’s to display on TV, you just need a Wi-Fi enabled TV or Gadget. You don’t need any software or tool to display media over TV’s or Gadgets.

Upcoming Support: Technology evolves faster, the Windows 7 is designed to work awesome with the new hardware’s and software’s. If 2009 will be the era of multi-touch screens and tablet PC’s, Windows 7 will be the best OS. It include the multi-touch feature. If you talk about processor Windows 7 will scale upto 256 processors. Wow, thats more than enough. The new 7 is ready for the future of computing.

On Overall Basis Windows 7 is a must upgrade, Words aren’t enough. You gotta try the OS to get the look and feel. Have a upgrade today rather feeling good about it later.
